Norwegian Forsvarsbygg (Norwegian Defence Estates Agency) has signed a contract with SR Entreprenør AS for the construction of a new radar facility at Skykula in Bjerkreim municipality (southwestern Norway). The contract value amounts to 124 million Norwegian kroner including VAT.

Forsvarsbygg states in a press release that SR Entreprenør AS, a company based in Rogaland (southwestern Norway), won the procurement against several bidders. The contract covers construction of the radar facility as well as road and site works. In addition, a garage is to be built approximately 10 kilometres from the facility, along the access road.

Forsvarsbygg plans to begin construction in June 2026. Work is expected to continue through autumn for as long as weather conditions permit, and the facility is planned to be completed in 2028.

"The radar facilities are being built in locations with demanding climatic conditions, which means we only have a few months of construction window per year. We work on planning and contracting during the winter months so that we are ready when weather conditions allow," says Ylva Sneve, project manager at Forsvarsbygg, in the press release.

Forsvarsbygg states that the project has its own environmental plan with guidelines covering areas including rigging, transport, terrain intervention, waste management, and mass handling.

The radar facility at Skykula is one of a total of eleven radar facilities that Forsvarsbygg is to build before 2030. The assignment follows a decision by the Norwegian Storting (parliament) to replace existing radar facilities with new technology. Forsvarsmateriell (Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency) is the overall project manager and is responsible for technology procurement. The Norwegian Air Force, Luftforsvaret, will be the end user of the facilities.
