Rheinmetall plans to establish a satellite test centre in Andøya, northern Norway. The initiative is being formalised through a letter of intent between the company's Nordic operations and Andøy municipality.
According to a press release from Rheinmetall, the parties intend to establish a facility, designated the Rheinmetall Integrated Process Facility (RhIPF), at Prærien Business Park in Andenes. The facility is intended to serve as a satellite test centre and form part of the growing space and defence cluster at Andøya.
The letter of intent covers areas including land lease, detailed planning, and construction processes. Rheinmetall will provide technical specifications and documentation for permit processes, while the municipality is responsible for enabling the infrastructure and managing administrative processes.
"We appreciate the constructive cooperation with Andøy municipality and look forward to continuing our close collaboration as the project progresses," says Morten Kjørum, Chief Executive of Rheinmetall Nordic, in the press release.
The project is, however, conditional on a final investment decision by Rheinmetall AG. The company also holds exclusive rights to the relevant site. The parties are now working towards a final lease agreement and preparations ahead of a possible construction start.
"We are very pleased that Rheinmetall has chosen Andøya for this strategic initiative," says Kjell Are Johansen, Mayor of Andøy municipality, in the press release.
