New Training Base for Ukrainian Soldiers Inaugurated in Poland

On 1 October, the defence ministers of Norway and Poland inaugurated the training base Camp Jomsborg in southeastern Poland. The base will be used for the training of Ukrainian soldiers within the framework of the multinational cooperation Operation Legio, where Norway plays a leading role.

Training at the facility has already commenced in temporary premises, and according to the Norwegian government, Ukrainian soldiers are currently being trained by instructors from Norway and Estonia. Ukraine's own instructors contribute with experiences from the frontline.

The construction of Camp Jomsborg, led by Norwegian engineering units, is expected to be fully completed before the end of the year. The facility will then be able to accommodate several thousand soldiers for training.

Norway states that the country has so far allocated approximately ten billion Norwegian kroner to the effort. The amount includes donations of military equipment, procurements from industry, and the construction of the base. Other Nordic and Baltic countries also contribute with materiel, which according to the Norwegian government, is equivalent to equipment for two brigades.

According to Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik, Poland has become the country where Norway has the most soldiers abroad on assignment via NATO. Operation Legio is led by Brigadier General Atle Molde and is part of the Norwegian aid programme Ellisiv.
