The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has ordered ten mobile short-range radar systems from Saab AB as part of efforts to strengthen Sweden's air defense capability. The systems, based on Saab's Giraffe 1X radar, will be delivered between 2025 and 2027, according to press releases from Saab and FMV.

The radar systems include Saab's Giraffe 1X and an associated command system, enabling the detection and identification of threats such as drones and incoming fire. Operators can manage the system directly from the protected vehicle without exposing themselves, which increases survivability, Saab states.

"I am proud that Sweden chooses to integrate our versatile ground radar Giraffe 1X as part of its air defense. Our solution will help strengthen air defense and protect forces in the field with advanced capability to detect and identify threats," says Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab's business area Surveillance.

This order is part of a three-year contract between FMV and Saab, valued at approximately 700 million SEK. The radar systems will be integrated with the Swedish Armed Forces' existing air defense systems and mounted on armored SISU GTP vehicles, known in the Armed Forces as Terrain Vehicle 24 (TGB24), FMV writes.

"The acquisition of the SRR (short-range radar system, editor's note) meets a much-anticipated need for additional sensors in the Armed Forces. Mounting the radar on an armored SISU vehicle is an effective solution that also increases survivability," says Christer Mellgren, project manager at FMV.
