The newly established company Sweden Ballistics AB (SWEBAL) plans to build a factory for the production of trinitrotoluene (TNT) in Nora (central Sweden). The factory is expected to create 50 direct jobs. The goal is to strengthen Sweden's and Europe's supply security within the defence industry, according to a press release from the company.
– Our promise to our customers is clear, we will prioritise domestic raw materials and subcontractors as much as possible. TNT has not been produced locally for almost 30 years, so now being able to ensure Swedish production over the long term is strategically important, both for us as a producer and for Europe's defence capability, says Joakim Sjöblom, CEO of SWEBAL, in the press release.
Behind SWEBAL are entrepreneur Joakim Sjöblom and engineer Carl Duforce, together with industry veteran Susanna Campbell and the engineering company HEAD Engineering.
– SWEBAL is making significant investments today to establish a new production facility for explosives, specifically trinitrotoluene (TNT). TNT is a crucial component and a clear bottleneck in the production of ammunition, which makes our investment critical to securing supply at a time when demand is high, writes Carl Duforce, in a post on LinkedIn.
The company has chosen Nora as the location due to the municipality's expertise in explosives and its position in the Örebro region (central Sweden). SWEBAL states that the project is awaiting approval from the Land and Environment Court and is planned to commence at the end of 2025. Production is expected to start approximately two years after construction begins.
– This will give the entire Nora a boost, but above all, it is important for Sweden and Europe, says Dan Pierre (M), municipal councillor in Nora, in the press release.
