NATO's Allied Command Transformation (ACT) has designated Task Force X-Arctic as a so-called Beacon Project. The project will develop and demonstrate a digitalised multi-domain capability for situational awareness in the North Atlantic and the Arctic by summer 2027.
According to an article from NATO ACT, implementation is led by the NATO Science and Technology Organization's Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), while Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) is responsible for the operational maritime framework. The project will test how manned and unmanned systems, shared data, and interoperable command systems can be integrated to strengthen maritime situational awareness in the Arctic.
Task Force X-Arctic is part of the Rapid Adoption Action Plan (RAAP), which was adopted at the NATO Summit in The Hague in 2025 and is intended to accelerate the introduction of new technology into the alliance's military operations. According to NATO, the project plan includes interoperability exercises and Arctic tests during 2026 and 2027, ahead of a larger demonstration phase.
