The Swedish Conscription and Assessment Agency has begun sending out conscription documents to approximately 110,000 Swedish youths born in 2007, according to a press release from the agency. The youths are subject to the law on total defense duty and are required to provide information as a first step towards potential conscription and basic training with mandatory military service.

The conscription documents contain about forty questions regarding health, education, interests, and personality. The responses are then used to select around 30,000 youths who will be called for conscription starting in May 2025. The first letters were sent out at the beginning of January, and responses must be submitted within 14 days of receipt.

– Conscription and performing military service is an obligation under the law on total defense duty. Performing military service is about defending Sweden's long-standing peace, freedom, and democracy and ensuring that Sweden remains an independent country, says Christina Malm, Director General of the Swedish Conscription and Assessment Agency, in the press release.

Of the total 8,500 training places for basic training with mandatory military service, the majority will be filled by those called for conscription, but youths who apply on their own initiative may also be considered. For those not called, there is also the opportunity to engage in voluntary defense organizations.
