The Military Academy Karlberg has once again become an army unit as of the turn of the year. The organisational change was marked by a ceremony at Karlberg Palace on Wednesday.

Army Chief Jonny Lindfors justifies the change by stating that the service branch chiefs need authority over personnel management.

– Right now, my message is, no revolution is underway with your entry into the army – keep calm and carry on, says Lindfors.

On 1 January 2026, the management of the school was transferred from the Swedish Armed Forces' Head of Education to the Army Chief. The school has been directly subordinate to the Headquarters since 1999 but now returns to the organisational form that has been in place for the majority of the time since 1792, announces the Swedish Armed Forces.

The activities at the school continue to be joint for the Swedish Armed Forces, where cadets from the army, navy, and air force are trained by the Swedish Defence University*. The unit commander, Colonel Jerker Sundström, welcomes the decision to be subordinated to a service branch instead of the central leadership.

– Overall, we are an army unit like any other but tasked with handling the needs of the entire Swedish Armed Forces, says Sundström.
