Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has signed an agreement with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (Forsvarsmateriell, FMA) valued at approximately 400 million NOK. The contract pertains to an upgrade of the combat system onboard the navy's Skjold-class vessels.

– We are pleased to continue our collaboration with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency on the Skjold-class to support and enhance the navy's operational capability and availability, says Kjetil Reiten Myhra, Vice President of Defence Systems at Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

According to the company, the project is a continuation of the upgrade of the vessels' combat systems that originally began in 2022. The Norwegian Navy currently operates six Skjold-class vessels, which are among the fastest naval ships globally.

– This contract is an important contribution to ensuring that the Skjold-class remains a relevant and formidable asset in the coming years. The upgrade enhances precision, detection capability, and endurance, and constitutes a key component in the overall modernisation of the vessels, says Stein Håvard Bergstad, Head of Maritime Capabilities at the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency.

The Nordic Defence Sector (NDS) has previously reported on the new agreement FMA signed with Umoe Mandal regarding the maintenance of the Skjold-class as well as other Norwegian vessels.
