Fortifikationsverket, on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces, has purchased Storuman Airport, formerly Gunnarn Air Base, from Storuman Municipality for 18 million kronor. The municipal council decided on the sale in May, and FortV will take possession at the end of the year, according to an article in Västerbottens-Kuriren on 28 August.

– It involves a lot of forest and many buildings. Above all, the airport has cost us a bit, not least in heating and maintenance, says municipal councillor Ulrik Dahlgren, (S), to Västerbottens-Kuriren.

VK writes that the air base in Gunnarn began construction during World War II and was in use as a military air base from 1943–2005, after which the municipality purchased the facility and regular air traffic continued until 2010.

Greta Stridsman, Head of Communications for Fortifikationsverket, tells VK that the airport was purchased on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces.

– The purchase has gone through, but possession is at the end of 2023. It is still a bit too early to say what we will do with the property.

Louise Levin, Head of Communications at the Air Force, says in a comment to Defence Sector News that it has not yet been decided what activities will be conducted at the air base.

– The Swedish Armed Forces tasked Fortifikationsverket with acquiring the properties to ensure our freedom of action for continued growth. We are looking at various options regarding what activities may be conducted there.
