FMV Orders Armoured Vehicles from Patria
FMV has signed an agreement with Patria Land Oy to deliver 321 armoured personnel carriers to the Armed Forces, which is part of a multinational collaboration. Deliveries will continue until 2030 and include several vehicle variants.
The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) states in a press release that they have signed an agreement with Patria Land Oy for the order of 321 armoured personnel carriers with associated weapon stations for delivery to the Swedish Armed Forces. The agreement is valued at approximately 5.3 billion SEK.
– This will be a significant addition to the army, which will receive a very potent armoured personnel carrier. Thanks to good cooperation with the supplier and the Finnish Defence Forces, we can place this order and receive quick deliveries, says Jonas Lotsne, head of FMV's Army Materiel Division.
The order is the result of the research and development agreement Common Armored Vehicle System (CAVS), which is a multinational collaboration between Sweden, Finland, Latvia, and Germany, as well as the industrial company Patria. It aims to develop an armoured vehicle system based on the common requirements of the involved countries. Sweden joined CAVS in 2022.
– It is record-fast to produce a series-manufactured vehicle in such a short time. Our success is a combination of joining the CAVS collaboration and minimizing adaptations for the Swedish defence. We have adopted a model that already exists and made only minor unique Swedish adaptations. Now the Swedish Armed Forces will receive a vehicle that meets the requirements and is delivered quickly and on time, says Johan Lampinen, section chief for armoured personnel carriers at FMV.
The largest Swedish adaptation being implemented is the integration of command support systems in the vehicles.
The vehicles will be equipped with capabilities such as protection in the form of smoke launcher systems and automatic fire extinguishing systems, as well as weapon systems with an overlay weapon station. The weapon station can be equipped with, among other things, a heavy machine gun, grenade launcher, and anti-tank weapons.
– Close and good cooperation with the Swedish Armed Forces, Patria, the Finnish Defence Forces, and Finland, which is the lead nation in the CAVS collaboration, has been a prerequisite for securing this order in such a short time. Transparency and good communication are prerequisites when it comes to accelerated procurement where everything happens very quickly, which is incredibly important given the current global situation, says Johan Lampinen.
Deliveries until 2030
According to FMV, a pre-series of 20 vehicles has already been delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces. In this order, in addition to troop transport vehicles, variants such as command vehicles and medical transport vehicles are also included. The first to be delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces are the troop transport vehicles, with deliveries starting in the first quarter of next year. This will be followed in subsequent years by the other vehicle variants. Deliveries will continue until 2030.
The vehicles will be part of motorised units, air defence, and artillery units.
