GKN Aerospace delivers an upgraded engine to the Gripen C/D within the programme RM12EP. The upgrade is intended to enhance the combat aircraft's operational capability through increased performance, improved endurance, and lower maintenance costs. This is stated by GKN Aerospace in a press release.
– The delivery is an important step in strengthening the endurance of the Gripen system, says Stefan Oscarsson, Head of Governmental Solutions at GKN Aerospace.
The programme started in 2019, is worth approximately 400 million Swedish kronor, and aims to enhance the operational capability of the Gripen system over time. The upgrade includes improved turbine components and updated software, which the company states will increase the engine's thrust, improve endurance, and simultaneously reduce operating and maintenance costs throughout its lifecycle.
– The work is carried out at GKN Aerospace's facility in Trollhättan (Sweden), where we are responsible for the development, production, system support, and maintenance of the RM12 engine for the Gripen C/D as well as the RM16 engine for the new generation Gripen E/F, says Stefan Oscarsson.
The company states that upgraded engines will be delivered continuously according to plan, with the goal of ensuring that the Gripen C/D remains an operationally relevant combat air system for many years to come.
