The Finnish Defence Forces have signed an agreement with the Finnish space technology company ICEYE for the acquisition of synthetic aperture radar satellites (SAR). The agreement follows the letter of intent signed in June and aims to strengthen Finland's intelligence and surveillance capabilities from space, the company states in a press release.

The agreement includes both satellites and the technical systems and components required to establish a national, space-based capability. ICEYE's satellites can deliver high-resolution images in all weather and light conditions, providing the ability for continuous situational monitoring and early warning.

– This marks a transition from a letter of intent to a concrete commitment. Finland gains its own space-based intelligence capability, and we are proud to deliver the technology, says Pekka Laurila, co-founder and CSO at ICEYE.

The contract was signed in Tampere by Brigadier General Juha-Matti Ylitalo from the Defence Forces' Logistics Command and Seppo Aaltonen, Vice President Nordics & NATO at ICEYE.

The total contract volume is approximately 158 million euros and also includes options to extend the satellites' lifecycle and eventually expand the system. ICEYE currently owns and operates the world's largest SAR constellation, with 54 satellites in orbit. The system provides ground resolution down to 25 centimeters and high observation frequency, enabling precise target detection and situational understanding.

The company emphasizes that the agreement not only strengthens Finland's capacity but also lays the foundation for a long-term partnership that can contribute to collective security among allied countries.
