Denmark's Crown Prince Christian was commissioned as a second lieutenant (sekondløjtnant) at a parade held at the Lieutenant School at Gardehusarkasernen barracks in Antvorskov, Slagelse (central Denmark). The Crown Prince was commissioned alongside approximately 120 other newly appointed officers.
Following the commissioning, the Crown Prince will serve as a platoon commander with Den Kongelige Livgarde (The Royal Life Guards), where he will take responsibility for conscripts reporting for duty in early August to complete twelve months of military service.
"I am proud and pleased that the Crown Prince has chosen to train as an officer in the Army, thereby maintaining the strong ties between the Armed Forces and the Royal House. It will serve as an example to Denmark's young people and increase interest in serving and contributing to building the Armed Forces' combat capability," said Thor Hilton, Commandant of the Army's Officer School (Hærens Officersskole), according to the Danish Defence.
Crown Prince Christian began his military career in February 2025 as a conscript with the Gardehusarregementet (Guard Hussar Regiment) at Gardehusarkasernen barracks in Slagelse (central Denmark). After completing his conscript service in August of the same year, he commenced officer training at the Army's Lieutenant School (Hærens Løjtnantsskole).
After approximately one year of training, cadets are commissioned to the Danish rank of sekondløjtnant (OF-1, equivalent to second lieutenant) and subsequently serve as platoon commanders with responsibility for up to 36 conscripts. Following further service, they may be promoted to lieutenant and choose to continue their military career or serve as reserve officers.
With his transfer to Den Kongelige Livgarde, Crown Prince Christian follows the opposite path to that of his father, King Frederik X, who completed his conscript service with the Life Guards and, following his officer commissioning, served with the Guard Hussar Regiment.
