The Danish Ministry of Defence, the Greenlandic self-government (Naalakkersuisut), and the port company Sikuki Nuuk Harbour A/S have agreed to build a naval quay in connection with the planned expansion of the port in Nuuk. The quay will provide the Danish Armed Forces with a dedicated location in the area and constitutes a concrete initiative within the framework of Sub-agreement 2 on the Arctic and North Atlantic.

– It is crucial that the defence has the best possible working conditions to carry out its tasks in and around Greenland, says Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen in a press release from the Ministry of Defence.

The new quay will be approximately 150 metres long with a water depth of about 10 metres. According to the plans, it will also be available for civilian shipping when not used by the military.

– A new naval quay in Nuuk is a welcome dual-use project, which can also help support the increasing civilian ship traffic in Nuuk. I view this very positively, says Vivian Motzfeldt, responsible for foreign affairs in the Greenlandic self-government.

The quay will be built, owned, and operated by Sikuki Nuuk Harbour A/S. The agreement means that the defence will have a permanent location in a port where capacity has previously been limited.

– There is no doubt that the establishment of a naval quay in Nuuk will strengthen the Armed Forces' military operations in Greenland, while the use of Nuuk's new international airport can be optimised, says Major General Søren Andersen, head of Arctic Command, in the press release.

The naval quay is part of larger investments within the framework of Sub-agreement 2 on the Arctic and North Atlantic, which aims to strengthen defence and security in the region. In total, the sub-agreements include investments of 27.4 billion Danish kroner up to 2033.
