BAE Systems Bofors launches Tridon Mk2, a new 40 mm air defense system. The system is designed to protect against modern airborne threats, including drones, and is based on the Bofors 40 mm automatic cannon L/70.

– Tridon Mk2 is the perfect solution for military operations, where soldiers need a proven, precise, and reliable air defense system to keep the airspace clear and protect troops and infrastructure, says Lena Gillström, CEO of BAE Systems Bofors.

Tridon Mk2 is a self-propelled air defense system with a firing rate of 300 rounds per minute. The system can be mounted on various vehicles and also deployed on platforms. It uses Bofors programmable ammunition 3P with a range of up to 12 kilometers.

In a segment with SVT Nyheter on April 1, Håkan Ekvall, head of ground-based air defense at BAE Systems Bofors, explains that, for example, four air defense systems could be deployed and then operated from a single location at a safe distance.

Each air defense unit is equipped with its own sensors and fire control system. The system is based on the Bofors 40 mm automatic cannon L/70. Today, a variant of it is used on, among others, the Swedish Combat Vehicle 90 and Air Defense Vehicle 90.

The company states that Tridon Mk2 will be able to use the programmable proximity-fuzed ammunition Bofors 3P (Prefragmented, Programmable, Proximity-fuzed). Bofors has provided this type of grenade for several years. At the end of 2020, they demonstrated how the grenade could take out drones.

– The system is adaptable and can be developed as threats evolve, making it one of the most effective air defense systems on the market today, continues Lena Gillström.
