The Large Uncrewed Undersea Vehicle (LUUV) that Saab is developing for the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has been launched, FMV said. Testing and evaluation will now continue.
– It is an important milestone for the project. The next step is continued testing and evaluation in a relevant environment, said Martin Nyqvist, FMV’s project manager for underwater warfare systems.
FMV signed the contract with Saab in August 2025 to develop and demonstrate the technology, as previously reported by NDS. The order is worth SEK 60 million, according to Saab. Saab is responsible for design, construction and testing. The vehicle uses Saab’s Autonomous Ocean Core autonomy system.
FMV compares the LUUV to a small submarine. The agency says it will be able to monitor large areas autonomously. In the long term, it is meant to operate at sea for long periods, with or without human control. Saab has said the vehicle will first serve as a sensor platform for monitoring seabed infrastructure and detecting underwater threats. In this first phase, it is not designed to carry weapons.
