The government has tasked the E-Health Agency with developing a national database for medical devices. The aim is to create better oversight and access to equipment that may be needed in healthcare and civil defense.
As part of the assignment, the agency will also collaborate with the Medical Products Agency to produce a national overview of the availability of medical devices and analyze how production looks in Sweden. The government emphasizes that the administrative requirements for companies and authorities should not be more extensive than necessary.
– The national database for medical devices is an important step to strengthen our preparedness and ensure that we have access to necessary healthcare products at all times. Through collaboration with the Medical Products Agency and other stakeholders, we can create an efficient and secure management of these products, says Minister of Health Acko Ankarberg Johansson in a press release from the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.
One of the goals is to investigate how information from the European database Eudamed can be made more accessible. The agency will also contribute to implementing a common standard for categorizing medical devices in accordance with the EU's nomenclature structure.
The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs' press release states that the new database is to be part of the solution to ensure the availability of pharmaceuticals and medical devices in a potential crisis or wartime situation.
