France and Sweden held the first meeting of their Nuclear Steering Group in Paris on 23 April, as announced by both the Swedish and French governments.

The meeting takes place against the backdrop of a speech on French nuclear doctrine delivered by French President Emmanuel Macron on 2 March at Île Longue, in which he announced bilateral strategic dialogues with European partner countries with the aim of developing a concept for forward-looking deterrence.

According to the joint statement, a roadmap has now been established for the continued work. Both countries simultaneously confirm their ambition for a stronger, safer, and better-defended Europe, according to the governments' statements.

NDS (Nordic Defence Sector) has previously reported that both Sweden and Denmark have engaged in nuclear dialogue with France, which was also confirmed in a joint statement from Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in March 2026.

Sweden and Denmark have accepted an invitation to enter into such a dialogue with France to discuss how we can together contribute to strengthening our collective deterrence in the nuclear domain, the two prime ministers wrote at the time.
