Saab has unveiled the first example of the Gripen F, the two-seat version of the Gripen E, at a ceremony at the company's facility in Linköping (southern Sweden, aerospace industry hub). The aircraft has been developed in collaboration with Brazilian industry and is intended for both training and operational missions. It has also been ordered by Thailand and Colombia.

According to a press release from Saab, Brazil has played an active role in the development of the Gripen F through the cooperation established in connection with the country's Gripen order in 2014. The programme has also included technology transfer and training of Brazilian engineers and technicians.

"The rollout of the Gripen F is a joint achievement between Saab, Brazilian industry, and the Brazilian Air Force, and reflects the deep trust we have built together over many years. Developing this aircraft together demonstrates how mature our collaboration has become," says Lars Tossman, Head of Saab's Aeronautics business area, in the press release.

The Gripen F is based on the same platform as the Gripen E but features a second cockpit, which according to Saab enables both pilot training and operational use within the same aircraft. The rear cockpit seat can be used by an instructor during training or by an additional crew member during missions.

Before the aircraft is delivered to the Brazilian Air Force, it will undergo a so-called flight test campaign.

The contract between Saab and Brazil covers a total of 36 Gripen aircraft, comprising 28 Gripen E and eight Gripen F variants. Deliveries began in 2020 and, according to Saab, eleven aircraft have so far been handed over to the Brazilian Air Force.
