> 38 students have begun the Danish Armed Forces' Arctic Basic Training in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, the largest class on the course to date.

**38 students began Arctic Basic Training (Arktisk Basisuddannelse) in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, in the week starting 15 July 2026. This is the largest intake so far in the six-month training programme in defence and preparedness, according to [Forsvaret](https://www.forsvaret.dk/da/nyheder/2026/arktisk-basisuddannelse-storste-hold-nogensinde/) (the Danish Defence). The programme started in 2024 with 22 students and took in 30 students last year. It can now accommodate up to 50 students per class.**

"I am very pleased that Arctic Basic Training is a success, because it gives young Greenlanders the opportunity for further education, which in time can lead to employment with the Danish Defence in Greenland," says Chief of Defence, General Michael W. Hyldgaard.

The commander of the Arctic Command, Major General Søren Andersen, says that the number of applications for the programme is high and that an increased intake makes society in Greenland more resilient. Among other things, students receive basic training in firefighting operations, selected police duties and maritime skills at the Royal Danish Navy's units in and around Greenland.
