Mistral AI and EcoDataCenter are investing 1.2 billion euros in a new facility in Borlänge (central Sweden). The partnership aims to strengthen Europe's technological independence and involves the installation of extensive computing capacity on Swedish soil.
The French AI company Mistral AI has chosen Sweden for its first infrastructure expansion outside its home country, according to a press release. The facility in Borlänge is planned to be operational by 2027 and will support the development of the company's upcoming AI models.
Sweden's EU Minister Jessica Rosencrantz comments on the investment, which corresponds to approximately 12.8 billion kronor, as proof of Sweden's position as a technology nation.
– It is a strong testament to Sweden's position as a leading tech nation and to Europe's collective strength in tech and AI. In an uncertain world, we are building capacity, competence, and competitiveness here in Europe – and strengthening our role in global technological development, she writes on the platform X.
EcoDataCenter is responsible for the design and operation of the infrastructure, which will utilise renewable energy and cooling technology. The data centre will house NVIDIA's latest generation Vera Rubin GPUs to handle demanding workloads. The collaboration is described as a step towards a fully European value chain where data is processed and stored locally.
– This investment is a concrete step towards building independent capabilities in Europe, fully dedicated to AI. By delivering a fully vertical offering with locally processed and stored data, we strengthen Europe's strategic autonomy and competitiveness, says Arthur Mensch, CEO and co-founder of Mistral AI.
Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter, believes that AI constitutes critical infrastructure for security and economic growth.
– Together with Mistral AI, we are building high-performance AI infrastructure on Swedish soil – with sustainability, resilience, and European strategic autonomy as core values, says Peter Michelson.
