FMV has signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin for the delivery of long-range radar systems of the TPY-4 type. The system will replace the Swedish Armed Forces' current radar PS-861, which is nearing the end of its service life. The total order value amounts to approximately one billion kronor.
The agreement includes initial deliveries from 2027, with an option for additional systems. FMV emphasizes that the procurement was conducted with a particular focus on time to quickly meet the Swedish Armed Forces' need for enhanced capabilities in air surveillance and early warning.
According to FMV's project manager Anna Stolpe, the new system means improved performance and increased range.
– The system will provide the Swedish Armed Forces with longer range and increased performance compared to the current system. It can, among other things, detect small targets at long distances, she says in a press release from FMV.
Defense Minister Pål Jonson emphasized the system's broad operational utility in a post on the platform X/Twitter:
– The radars enhance the Swedish Armed Forces' air defense capability and can detect threats such as ballistic missiles, drones, and fighter jets, he writes.
Lockheed Martin describes the TPY-4 as a fifth-generation radar system with open architecture, adapted for integration into existing air defense solutions. Sweden becomes the third country to choose the system, after the Norwegian and U.S. air forces. Norway acquired the TPY-4 in November 2022 and expanded its order in September 2024 to a total of eleven systems.
