The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has signed a contract with the German supplier Hensoldt for new Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) interrogators valued at approximately 100 million Swedish kronor. The procurement was conducted through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), and deliveries for the project PI-05M will occur continuously throughout 2026.

– In addition to enhancing the protection of national borders, this also contributes to stronger cooperation and increased interoperability within the European Union and NATO, says Claudia Österlund, project manager at FMV.

The system uses radar and transponder queries to identify aircraft and other objects. The technology reduces the risk of friendly fire and thereby strengthens the Swedish air defence, according to FMV. Ground and air tests were conducted with approved results in collaboration with a certifying authority at the end of 2025.

The integration into the ground-based IFF system will be carried out over the coming years. This work builds on the ongoing enhancement of the Armed Forces' capability for secure identification, where FMV has previously completed IFF installations on naval vessels.

– Thanks to close cooperation with the supplier, we will be able to integrate the new interrogators into the ground-based IFF system in the coming years. The delivery of materiel has already begun and will occur continuously throughout 2026, says Claudia Österlund.
