The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has ordered a new flight control computer for the Gripen from Saab. The order, announced on 15 October 2026, is worth SEK 1.3 billion.
— The flight control computer is a central and safety-critical part of the JAS 39 system, says Carl-Fredrik Edström, head of Flight and Space Materiel at FMV.
The new unit will replace the flight control computer currently used in the JAS 39C/D and JAS 39E/F. According to FMV, the existing unit was first developed for the JAS 39A. It is nearing the end of its technical life and can no longer be maintained in a sustainable way in the long term, according to the agency.
The flight control computer turns the pilot’s stick movements into control surface deflections. FMV says the project will need extensive development work and verification testing. Saab says delivery is planned during 2030.
— The new flight control computer will contribute to Gripen’s capability and performance for decades to come, says Marcus Wandt, head of Saab’s business area Aeronautics.
The company says the new design is meant to secure long-term availability, performance and security of supply.
